“The truth is…there’s incredible stuff going on right here in Austin that I think can be good models for the rest of America to follow”

May 9, President Barack Obama while kicking off his Jobs tour in the great city of Austin Texas!

A Visit from the President – Keeping Austin WOWED

From the front page of Black Enterprise to robust programming at South By Southwest, The Capital City African American Chamber of Commerce is having just as amazing a year as the city of Austin.
Accordingly, the President of CCAACC Natalie Madeira Cofield was invited to share in the excitement of President Obama’s recent visit to Austin as a VIP guest to his intimate address at the Applied Materials headquarters. As Co-Chair of the newly formed Black Technology Council, I was lucky enough score an invite to tag along (thanks POCCAACC)! Applied Materials is one of the top ten largest employers of Austin, all of which are members of the Capital City African American Chamber of Commerce. We were front and center, right in the action, seated in the front row amongst Austin’s political elite. It was a truly mind-blowing experience.

President Obama’s visit solidifies Austin’s position as the fastest growing technology hub in the country. With a projected growth rate of 6.1% Austin has been named the fastest growing city in Texas. In his charming and passionate remarks at Applied Materials, The President lauded the progressive culture of innovation that makes Austin such a distinctive city.

Mr. President began his address by describing his experience at New Manor Tech High School. New Manor Tech equips a bright group of young people with the tech acuity to excel in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). He extolled the project based curriculum as a best practice for schools nationwide. To the delight of the crowd, he then showed his characteristic humanity by recounting a visit to Stubbs Barbeque during which he lunch-bombed some very surprised patrons who were not expecting a sit-down with the POTUS over their ribs and brisket!

Though it was hard to take my eyes off of the POTUS, I spent a moment looking around the room. All who had the privilege of listening, of watching, were for a few majestic minutes tele-ported to a world in which Democrat and Republican, young and old, black, white, and everything in between, are at one in a universal desire to see our country return to the thriving center of commerce that lives at the heart of our identity. This unity was strengthened by the pride President Obama evoked through his many assertions that Austin, Texas is leading the charge into a new era of American economic leadership. As the President said so beautifully, “we’re poised for a time of progress — if we’re willing to seize it” Here in Austin, we live and work each day to keep growing a palpable energy that will lead us to not only ride the wave of progress, but to create it.

With the President’s stamp of approval, there’s no telling where this city can go. Silicon Valley, watch out! Silicon Hills are on the rise, and we’re moving mountains, one sonic boom at a time. Thank you Mr. President.

The Board of Directors for the Capital City African American Chamber of Commerce (CCAACC) voted unanimously to support the capital needs of the Austin Independent School District (AISD) on April 18, 2013. Support was drawn from a series of meetings with community and civic leaders and members of AISD leadership to best understand the value of the bonds to the Greater Austin community.

Encouragement for the May 2013 AISD Bond Election is the first of many upcoming education engagement strategies leveraged by CCAACC’s newly formed education committee which was established to aid in the development of policy, issues and programs in the areas of K-12, higher education, and workforce development within the Greater Austin region. The committee is chaired by CCAACC Board Member Patricia Hayes, owner of PVH Consulting.

CCAACC strongly encourages the community’s support of the May 2013 AISD Bond Election as we believe that it will further enhance educational quality, safety, facility improvements and equality throughout Austin’s rapidly growing region.
